The Myopia Cascade

How myopia becomes a surgical emergency

Most Singaporeans know myopia as a glasses prescription. What they don't know is what happens inside a highly myopic eye over decades — and why catching it early changes everything.

Low Risk

Age 6–10

Myopia begins

Glasses. Normal life. Most parents think the story ends here.

Progressing

Age 10–20

Progressive myopia

Each dioptre stretches the eye ~0.35mm. At –8D, the eye is significantly elongated.

Caution

Age 20–40

Silent structural changes

Retina thins. Lattice degeneration. Risk accumulates invisibly.

Warning

Age 40–55

Early complications

Macular traction. Foveoschisis. 10.3% develop macular degeneration within 12 years.

Critical

Age 50+

Surgical emergency

Retinal detachment. Macular hole. Surgery within hours or days.

Protected

With Dr. Wong

Vision preserved

The earlier the relationship begins, the better the outcome at every stage.

Patient Information

Understanding your eye condition

Knowledge is reassuring. Dr. Wong believes in empowering patients and their families with clear, jargon-free information about their conditions and treatment options.

What is Retinal Detachment?

Emergency Condition · Surgery Required

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. When it peels away from the tissue beneath it, this is called a retinal detachment — and it requires urgent medical attention.

  • Sudden floaters, flashes of light, or a "curtain" across your vision are warning signs
  • Most detachments are caused by a tear or hole in the retina
  • Surgery is highly effective, especially when treated early
  • If you notice symptoms, seek care immediately — do not wait

What is Macular Degeneration?

Age-Related Condition · Ongoing Management

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula — the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It is the most common cause of vision loss in people over 60.

  • Dry AMD progresses slowly; wet AMD can cause rapid vision loss
  • Blurring, distortion, or dark spots in central vision are common symptoms
  • Anti-VEGF injections can significantly slow wet AMD progression
  • Regular monitoring is essential to catch changes early

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Clinic Visit · Friendly & Thorough

Your first appointment with Dr. Wong is a conversation as much as an examination. We take the time to understand your history, concerns, and goals before any investigation or treatment.

  • Comprehensive history-taking and symptom review
  • Dilated eye examination with specialist equipment
  • OCT and imaging scans when needed
  • Clear explanation of findings and all available options

After Your Surgery

Post-Operative Care · Recovery Guide

Recovery after retinal surgery requires careful attention and follow-up. Dr. Wong and his team provide detailed post-operative guidance and are always reachable with concerns.

  • You may need to maintain a specific head position after some surgeries
  • Avoid strenuous activity and air travel during recovery
  • Vision improvement can take weeks to months
  • Follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring healing

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Dr Wong is a vitreoretinal surgeon who treats conditions affecting the retina and the back of the eye. His core specialities include retinal detachment, macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, dislocated intraocular lenses, and high myopia complications. He also performs cataract surgery, particularly complex cases such as cataracts following vitrectomy and cataracts in highly myopic eyes. Learn more about Dr Wong →
The surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort and a foreign-body sensation are normal in the first few days after surgery, but these are manageable with prescribed painkillers and eye drops. Most patients describe the recovery as far less painful than they expected. Read about retinal detachment →
At a private practice like Asia Pacific Eye Centre, cataract surgery typically costs between $8,000 and $11,000 per eye. The total depends on the type of intraocular lens (IOL) chosen, the complexity of the case, and whether Medisave or insurance is used.
